Clearcast® Herbicide is an effective and selective treatment solution for the control of floating, emergent and submersed aquatic weed species. Clearcast is the industry standard for cattail control. In addition to cattails, Clearcast is an excellent choice for selective control of invasive weeds such as watershield, water hyacinth and broad-spectrum control of a variety of pondweeds. Clearcast can be applied as a foliar, surface or injection spray and as well as a pre-emergent in ponds and lakes.
The active ingredient in Clearcast is absorbed through the leaves, stems and roots of vegetation. It binds with an enzyme found only in plants, and not found in humans, mammals, birds, fish or insects. Sensitive plants stop growing within 24 hours after treatment, and then slowly break down as food and energy reserves are exhausted. The rate at which plants are controlled varies with plant size and growth (varies from 3 to 8 weeks).
Clearcast may be broadcast-applied to emergent vegetation, the water surface or injected below the water surface depending on target weed. Clearcast should be diluted with water prior to application. Under Surface-matted conditions, inject Clearcast below the water surface to achieve better product distribution for submersed weeds. Mix 2 oz. of Clearcast with 1 oz of MSO Surfactant and 1 gallon of water to cover about 700 square feet for emergent vegetation.
For Sensitive submersed plants, such as curly-leaf pondweed, sago pondweed and other thin leaf pondweeds apply Clearcast at a rate of 2 quarts per acre. Dilute with 20 gallons or more of water to provide uniformed coverage of the desired treated area. A follow up application of 1 quart per acre, 2 - 4 weeks following the initial application maybe beneficial to provide complete control.

Cattails have dense, "sausage-like," spikey flowers, called the catkins that appear on top of the long, slender stems in late summer to early fall. Cattails can be partially submerged or in boggy areas with no permanently standing water and can grow to 5 or 10 feet in height. They provide a wildlife habitat and refuge. Overgrowth can choke off open water, driving away birds.
Small pondweed has several lateral branches that are attached to a slender stem. The narrow leaves are arranged alternately on the branches and taper where they attach to the stem.
Smartweed is a perennial plant that forms dense colonies in shallow water or moist soils and can grow to 3 feet tall. Smartweed leaves are oblong, and stems are jointed. Leaves are arranged alternately upon the stem. Flowers are white or pink and are small. Smartweed may be emersed or submersed with only the flowers being displayed.
Variable-leaf watermilfoil has long stems with whorls of finely divided leaves. This milfoil is rooted in the bottom of water bodies and arise to the surface of the water. When they reach the water, the stems turn and grow horizontally. The submerged leaves are feather-like and occur in whorls of 4 - 6. They are 1 to 2 inches long. The emersed leaves are stiff, longer than wide and have serrated margins. The flowers are small and reddish. Variable-leaf watermilfoil can reproduce by seeds or fragmentation and is an aggressive invader. Because of its tremendous growth rate variable-leaf watermilfoil can completely take over shallow ponds.
Water hyacinths vary in size from a few inches to over three feet tall. The water hyacinth has striking light blue to violet flowers located on a terminal spike. Water hyacinth is a very aggressive invader and can form thick mats. If these mats cover the entire surface of the pond they can cause oxygen depletion and fish kills. Water hyacinth leaves are rounded and leathery, attached to spongy and sometimes inflated stalks. The plant has dark feathery roots.
Alligatorweed is an emersed plant. It can grow in a variety of habitats, including dry land, but is usually found in water. It may form sprawling mats over the water or along shorelines. Alligatorweed stems are long branched, and hollow. Leaves are simple, elliptic, and have smooth margins. The leaves are the opposite. The whitish papery flowers grow on stalks. Alligatorweed flowers during the warm summer months.

Floating leaves are circular, and are attached to stems that are anchored in the soil. The leaves create a bowl-like appearance and do not lay flat on the water surface. Yellow flowers emerge from the plant.
American pondweed has oval-shaped leaves that spread across the water surface. The seed head extends above the water on slender stalks. American pondweed can form dense mats and block sunlight for submersed vegetation. American pondweed can be mistaken for Illinois pondweed.
Arrowhead is a shallow aquatic weed with leaves that are shaped like an arrow. (They also resemble a wishbone.) Leaves are above the water most of the time, but can sometimes be submersed or floating. Arrowhead has distinct veins that can be seen on leaves that arise from a common point. The flowers and fruit are produced on leafless stems. These may reach 1.5-3 feet tall. Flowers have three sepals and three white petals. The petals are 8-14 mm long. The root system resembles a bulb.
Clasping-leaf pondweed leaves are wide and wavy. They have a broad base that wraps around the stem. The upper part of the stem is branched and leafy with leaves alternately arranged on the stem.
Curly-leaf pondweed leaves are somewhat stiff and crinkled, resembling lasagna noodles. They are approximately 1/2 inch wide and 2 - 3 inches long. The leaves are arranged alternately around the stem. Leaves become denser at the end of branches. Curly leaf-pondweed can be confused with clasping leaf pondweed.
Eurasian watermilfoil is an exotic species. Its leaves are feather-like and sometimes produce reddish flowers that extend above the water. The stems are red to brown in color. It can dominate a pond very quickly by fragmentation. Pieces of the plant grow roots to develop a new plant. There are many native milfoil plants which do not have as many feather-like leaves and are much less aggressive.
Flowers of this plant are very small and white in color. Almost all plants of this species are female. Seeds are not produced in any North American plants. Parrotfeather reproduces asexually. New plants grow from fragments of already rooted plants. There is no real predator to the parrotfeather, so it grows out of control. While part of the milfoil family, it is easily distinquishable from other milfoils as it grows below and above the surface of the water.
Phragmites is a large grass native to wetland sites throughout temperate and tropical regions of the world. The erect stems can grow to 3 - 18 feet tall, with taller plants growing in areas with hot summers and fertile growing conditions. The leaves are broad for a grass. Seed pods emerge at the top of the plants.
The native pickerelweed is a very common emersed plant. It is a prolific grower and can cover large areas. Pickerelweed typically grows to about 2 to 3 feet tall. Its leaves are large, up to five inches wide, and are usually twice as long. Leaf shapes are variable, but are usually lance-shaped. The easiest way to recognize pickerelweed is by its spike of violet-blue flowers. Each flower lasts only one day.
Sago pondweed grows from thickly matted rhizomes. It has no floating leaves. The stems are thin and have highly branched leaves, about 1/16 of an inch wide and 2 to over 12 inches long tapering to a point. The leaves grow in thick layers and originate from a sheath. The fruit is nut-like 1/8 to 1/4 inches long and 1/10 to 1/8 inches wide.
