Captain® Liquid Copper Algaecide is the right tool for economical and fast-acting control of a broad-spectrum of filamentous algae and planktonic algae in a wide range of fresh water applications. Algae control occurs in 3 to 7 days following a Captain application and there are no restrictions on treated water, even immediately after use for swimming, fishing, watering livestock, irrigating turf or ornamental plants.

How Captain Works

The mode of action for Captain is uptake through the algal cells where the copper ion inhibits photosynthesis providing a fast-acting result. Algae is an aquatic plant that can grow anywhere moisture, light and nutrients combine to support growth. You certainly can't control how wet your pond is; and there's not much you can do about how much sunlight hits the water. You can, however, avoid fertilizing near the pond or anywhere rainwater runoff may enter the water.

How To Apply Captain

Apply Captain anytime algae is present. Apply Captain at a rate of 1 to 2 gallons per surface acre. When determining the amount of Captain to use, consider only the area that is covered in algae. Mix 32 ounces Captain with 2 ½ gallons of water, spray onto only ¼ to 1/3 of the surace area of the pond at a time. Treating all algae across the entire surface area at one time can cause oxygen depletion and result in harm to your fish. For severe algae infestations, limit treatment to 1/3 of the water surface when the water temperature is between 65°F and 85°F. The remaining two 1/3 fractions of the body of water should be treated at 7 day intervals.

When treating an algae problem this bad, you must split the Captain application into two or three treatments.
Splitting the applications helps fish to adjust safely to the change in oxygen levels.

Captain is most effective when it is applied in bright, early morning sunlight under calm conditions when water temperature is at least 60°F. Apply at the first sign of an algae bloom, if possible. Algae control will occur in 3 to 7 days following application. Larger mats should be broken apart before treatment with high pressure water or a flat tool. Retreat when regrowth appears.

Filamentous Algae

Also known as “pond scum” or “moss,” this type of algae can form dense, hair-like mats on the water’s surface. If left untreated, the mats can cover the entire surface of the pond. There are many species of filamentous algae and often more than one species will be present at the same time in the pond.

Muskgrass

Chara spp.

Muskgrass is often mistaken for a vascular plant, but is actually a form of algae. It grows most commonly in shallow water where the nutrient levels are high. Its rough texture and strong, musty odor, almost garlic-like, easily distinguishes it when pulled from the water.

Pithophora Algae

Pithophora spp.

Pithophora belongs to the family of filamentous green algae. It may be found growing on the bottom or in dense mats on the surface of ponds. This algae is often described as resembling a tangled mass of cotton or wool-like growth which is very course to the touch. It may range in color from lime green to a dark greenish brown. The surface mats generally form in warmer weather when gas bubbles, produced by the plant, are trapped within the dense algal growth, causing them to become buoyant. Disturbance of these mats by high wind or heavy rain events may cause them to temporarily sink to the bottom. This often gives a false impression that the growth has "disappeared", only to have it return to the surface within several days.

Planktonic Algae

Chlamydomonas, Chlorella, Euglena, Closterium, Anacystis spp.

Also known as “blue-green” algae, this type of algae is actually millions of microscopic plants that give the pond a “pea-soup” appearance. If left untreated, natural die-off in the fall may cause a fish kill.
