How PondPak with Sonar A.S. Works

Systemic absorbtion of Sonar
Systemic products are absorbed by the leaves, shoots and roots providing complete control of target plants.

An improper balance of nuisance aquatic weeds and algae interferes with your ability to enjoy your pond. Left uncontrolled, aquatic plants such as duckweed can upset your pond's natural ecosystem, affecting wildlife nesting and fish populations and making your pond unsightly. Weeds and algae can also ruin your recreational use for fishing, swimming and boating. Read on to learn how the different components of the SePRO PondPak work to restore natures balance.

How Sonar Works

Mode of Action: Sonar controls unwanted aquatic vegetation by restricting the plants’ ability to make food, causing them to die. This involves inhibiting development of yellow pigments that protect a plant’s chlorophyll from decomposition by sunlight. As the plant’s chlorophyll decreases, so does its capacity to produce food. The visual symptom of Sonar’s action is bleaching (turning white) on the terminal bud or growing points of the plant.

What to Expect: Sonar is selective and controls target weeds slowly. It lets desirable vegetation re-establish itself, and does not result in oxygen depletion or fish kill. Aquatic weeds remain under control for a full season and often longer.

It takes 30 to 60 days for Sonar to control the established weeds. You should expect full results within 90 days. You’ll be able to observe the visual symptoms of Sonar’s action as chlorosis, or bleaching, gradually appears on the terminal buds, or growing points, of the plant.  Plants in the intermediate range of susceptibility may require treatment at the maximum label rate. Typically these species are only partially controlled.

How SePRO Blue Works

SePRO Blue Lake and Pond Colorant is formulated to enhance the beauty of your water by imparting a natural blue tint and reducing sunlight penetration. The reduction of sunlight penetration into the water decreases the plants ability to make food for itself by reducing the light available for photosynthesis. SePRO Blue is not recommended as a standalone weed control product but may be used in conjunction with other products like the SePRO PondPak to produce the desired effects.

How Captain Works

The mode of action for Captain is uptake through the algal cells where the copper ion inhibits photosynthesis providing a fast-acting result.

When treating an bad algae problem, you must split the Captain application into two or three treatments. Splitting the applications helps fish to adjust safely to the change in oxygen levels.

Algae is an aquatic plant that can grow anywhere moisture, light and nutrients combine to support growth. You certainly can't control how wet your pond is; and there's not much you can do about how much sunlight hits the water. You can, however, avoid fertilizing near the pond or anywhere rainwater runoff may enter the water.

How Revive Works

Revive is a formulation of natural microorganisms (bacteria) indigenous to soils and water. When added to ponds in sufficient numbers, the microorganisms utilize the available nitrogen and phosphorous, making these nutrients less available to unsightly algae and weeds that cause pond problems.

If aquatic weeds have impeded fishing, boating or swimming and made your pond unsightly, there is a solution: The PondPak featuring Sonar A.S. from SePRO Corporation. Sonar is the world's leading brand of aquatic herbicide for the selective, long-term control of undesirable aquatic vegetation. Sonar makes water usable for recreation, brings the fish population back into balance and restores property values; all without any restrictions on post-treatment swimming, fishing or drinking.

How to Apply PondPak with Sonar A.S.

Now you can take control of excessive aquatic weeds and algae with the SePRO PondPak. Nowhere else can you find one complete solution that provides season-long, do-it-yourself pond care delivered in one convenient package. All ponds are different and many variables must be taken into consideration when planning a proper treatment...but don't let that intimidate you. The actual application methods are simple and a SePRO pond advisor will gladly help you through the planning process. Read on to learn the basics.

Step 1: Captain* (Algae control):Day 1

  • Apply Captain at rate of 1 gallon per half-acre of water.
    • If pond is totally covered, treat 1/3 of pond at a time and wait 7 days between applications.
    • Mix 32 ounces Captain with 2 ½ gallons of water. Spray the algae until it turns purple-blue.

Step 2: SePRO Blue* (Water colorant): Day 2

(At least 12 hours after Captain application. No longer than 2-3 days.)

  • Throw in 4 packets for a 1-acre pond with an average depth of 4 feet
  • Throw in 2 packets for a ½ -acre pond with an average depth of 4 feet

Step 3: Sonar A.S. (Weed control): Day 2 - 7

  • Apply at a rate of 1 quart Sonar A.S. per acre. Use 1 ½ quarts Sonar A.S. for watermeal
  • Apply at a rate of 1 pint Sonar A.S. per half acre.
    • Mix with 1 gallon of water. Spray in a straight stream directly in the water (not on top of plants such as duckweed and watermeal). If the pond is covered with duckweed or watermeal, put the nozzle under the water and disperse the Sonar A.S.

Application

The labeled rate for Sonar A.S. should be split and applied in two applications about 10 - 14 days apart. For small ponds, application can be made from the bank, or in the middle from a small boat if possible. Dilute the product in a large container with water according to labeled rates and empty directly into the water. If you are using a sprayer, place nozzle of the sprayer underneath the water surface and inject the product into the pond to apply. It is not necessary to directly spray the plants for effective control. If infestation is heavy, disperse the weeds in order to get the product directly into the water. Be sure to triple rinse the container and pour the wash water back into pond.

Timing

Sonar A.S. can be applied starting in early spring, summer and fall.

Pond Level

Best control is obtained when water discharge can be stopped for thirty days or longer. Pond levels should be at or near normal water level when treated. Excessive outflow dilutes Sonar A.S. and reduces the chance of control. Outflow can be reduced by lowering pond level prior to treating with a siphon made from a rubber or PVC pipe.

Control Time

Plants should start turning white as control begins in 15 - 30 days. It may take 30 - 90 days for final results. This slow rate of control is beneficial as it greatly decreases the chance for a severe change in oxygen levels which can harm fish.

No Restrictions

There are no restrictions on swimming, fishing, boating or livestock use. Some precautions may apply for irrigation, see product label for complete details.

Step 4: Revive* (Improve water clarity): Day 1 - 30

  • Initial application of 15 pounds for average one-acre pond (3 pounds per acre-foot). Maintain pond with 5 pounds for average one-acre pond (1 pound per acre-foot), every two weeks.
  • Initial application of 7 ½ pounds for a ½ -acre pond. Maintain the pond with 2 ½ pounds every two weeks.
